Last Saturday, I attended the Marks & Spencer breakfast event to celebrate Derby Day and went with an outfit that's more girly than I would usually wear, but if you can't dress up during the Spring Racing Carnival when else would you have the opportunity to wear a fascinator and frills?

For those of you unfamiliar to the realm of Spring racing, it's the biggest event of the year in Melbourne and is basically a week where people come together to watch the horse races, but more commonly, it's a social event where you have the opportunity dress up and have a good day with your friends. With Derby Day starting off the week, the dress code is monochrome, black, white, greys you name it.

Focusing on interchangeable basics, UNIQLO's current Set Up for Summer collection is the perfect combination of tops and bottoms for everyday and work. In block colours and soft, subtle prints, it's all about the core wardrobe essentials. Going for an all white look, my outfit is all about soft tailoring and contrasting the clothes with accessories. With uni exams just around the corner for me, I've been living in these jogger-esque trousers- it's the perfect piece to make you look more put together than you really intended.

WEARING: ASOS skirt | Mon Purse clutch | Uniqlo Shirt | Jo Mercer heels

With the Spring Racing carnival in full bloom and the Melbourne Cup Carnival in a few weeks time, it would only make sense to start gathering outfit options. A midi length dress with feminine lace, all white & intricate details are the usual style race-goers opt for, but if you're one who prefers a slightly more versatile look, a two piece is an option for you. Topped with  a statement fascinator, there's so much that you can do with a skirt and top combo. Especially with a pop of metallic pleats, under-dressing won't be the issue for you this year.

The Summer Slip Dress

The easiest thing to throw on, on those warm Spring/Summer days is a slip dress. The most annoying thing about wanting a lightweight fabric is the very real fear of whatever material being TOO-lightweight (read stripey undies/ control briefs on full show) so linen or silk is what I opt for. Slip dresses are great under knits & jackets + go well with sneakers or heels so if you don't have one yet in your wardrobe, definitely look into find the perfect style for you.
